It’s Finally “Meet Season”!

The Montezuma high school girls and boys cross country got off on the right foot this week at at Williamsburg. The meet had to be pushed back into the evening due to the predicted heat for the safety of the student athletes. By the end of the high school girls race, it was twilight.

Conditions were perfect. Sunny, upper 70s with a slight breeze and a bright sunset to accompany the races. With only a few practices under their belt, the junior high Braves and Bravettes did not compete this week to help continue to prepare them for their season. You can catch them next week at the Grinnell Meet for their big debut!

3 Braves Toe the Line at Williamsburg

Starting out for Montezuma Cross Country was the high school boys. We only had three runners, with two being completely fresh to the sport, and longtime running veteran, Brayden Stockman. Next week, we will add a fourth runner, freshman, Colton Benson.

Junior, Brydon Henning Digs In at the End of the Race

The boys ran strong today. They know that they can continue to grow, but are excited with all that they have already accomplished up to this point. Junior, Bryson Henning, came in as the top Montezuma runner with a time of 19:46. A great start for this being his second time running a 5K (about 3.1 miles). Shortly after was Stockman, later followed by Zach Templeton in his first ever long distance race.

Senior, Zach Templeton In His Long Distance Race Debut

On the girls side, we saw much more depth already in this season of Bravette runners. With 12, there was no shortage of Montezuma athletes to cheer on throughout the race. We saw one new face, that of junior Katie Probasco, and three freshmen in their high school running prologue.

Bravettes Just Before the Gun

Junior and two-time state qualifier, Elise Boulton ran her way to the awards ceremony after the meet earning herself a 10th place medal. Just missing a medal by a few places was freshman, “MJ”, and shortly after was another freshman, Mia Boulton. The rest of the scoring members were junior, Carmen Klos and sophomore, Beka Teumer. The top seven runners are varsity with the first five as scorers and the last two to help break ties.

Two standouts from the girls race was Teumer and junior, Alyssa Kline who each earned their fastest 5K times that they have ever run. Both cut off over a minute from their previous time!
