The Blue & White Are Tough

The semifinals were the end of the 2019 volleyball road for Montezuma. Up against North Tama, it was a true test of athleticism throughout.
Each match started off really strong and close until the halfway point when the Redhawks would pull away. Montezuma’s whole team never gave up. Every single play mattered.

If you weren’t able to make it, here are some exciting moments from the night:
The first point of the night went to the Bravettes after a long, dramatic volley. Once the ball hit the court on the opposing side of the net, the crowd went absolutely wild! If you’re unfamiliar with the North Tama gym, it is quite small. But the volume of the Montezuma community was huge.

In the second match, senior, Shelby Conger had a fantastic kill slamming the ball through two defenders at the net attempting a block. Later, sophomore, Ashlyn Krousie powered the ball straight into a Redhawk blocker that ricocheted into the Montezuma crowd for the point. There was a huge comeback when the Bravettes were able to get within four points.

Throughout the three games, there were countless saves with players making big contact to the court. Directly after a big hit, offense would just start to celebrate but quickly needed to snap right back into it because the ball was actually still in play! Luckily, Montezuma was able to make a lot of those critical digs.
It was an emotional night for Montezuma as they were not ready for the season to be over. They have gone through tremendous growth both in their skills and as a team in these last few months. The community support helped to mend some of the potential broken hearts after the last team huddle.

Congratulations to the three seniors on strong high school volleyball careers. Wavy Roorda, Maddy Mckeag, and Shelby Conger. Roorda set a school record earlier this season in surpassing 1000 set assists. McKeag, traveled straight to Traer from FFA Nationals where she was competing in Indianapolis. She has had a crucial roll as the libero helping to dig the ball up. Conger was a huge role filler since last year and became a talented player throughout the rotation on the court both with her serving and help at the net. She truly gave her all in her last game with the Bravettes. She is never scared to dive for a loose ball. In her last play, she took a hard fall and had to sit out the end of the game.
Great job to all of the Montezuma Bravettes, both coaches and athletes, this season on all of your hard work that you’ve put in.
