Braves Talent Shines Under Friday Night Lights
It may have been a full moon on Friday the 13th, but there was no bad luck for the Braves!
The Montezuma Braves football team won against Winfield-Mt. Union 76-48 bringing their record up to 3-0 for the season.
The first half seemed to be an even fight back and forth. When one team scored, the other echoed with another. In the second half, the Braves were able to distance their lead. The chemistry between this team and coaching staff is undeniable. Here are some highlights:
The first quarter was a call in response between teams, but Montezuma kept their intensity throughout. With 2:42 left in the second quarter, senior, Brayden Arendt ran 21 yards for the touchdown. Following, sophomore quarterback, Eddie Burgess made a dramatic push to the end zone for the two point conversion.
Junior, Trey Shearer had an exciting end to the first half. With a minute left, he scored a touchdown. Next, he made an interception, but there were flags on the play. Four seconds left, another interception by Burgess. The last play Shearer took it all the way from the WMU side for the touchdown. He zigzagged through the defense with his teammates there with him to block. Quick thinking, quick feet, and quick changes had the home crowd roaring for the Braves. The second that the ball got into his hands, the entire Montezuma Dance Team were jumping up and down exclaiming that ”he’s gotta go all the way!” And “look how fast he is!” And...just a lot of screaming.
The halftime show was just as busy as that last paragraph was. First this years’ class of Montezuma’s Hall of Fame Inductees were introduced. Many current athletes listened to the accolades announced in amazement.
Next, the Montezuma Dance Team performed an exciting Pom routine called Break A Sweat. It began with an eye catching jump from senior, Wavy Roorda. There wasn’t a dull moment while they performed. Its clear to see the hard work that the team has been putting in this fall.
The Montezuma Pep Band closed out halftime with some music and the school song.
Going into the second half, the Braves were up 46-32.
Quarterback, Playmaker, and phenomenal athlete, Eddie Burgess was on fire. He was zeroed in on his teammates. When there was an opening, he got them the ball. When the pass wasn’t available, he showed his athleticism and would run the ball. Often times he powered through the defense and it took a handful to actually take him down.
In the third quarter, Burgess threw a pass to junior, Cole Watts. The ball was hit up by an opponent, but Watts quickly reacted and was still able to make the catch to bring the score up to 60-32.
It was all about the teamwork for this Montezuma team to get another victory, but they have shown some thrilling 8-man football already this season.
Next up, the Braves take on WACO (1-2) on September 20th with a 7PM kickoff for the Homecoming Game.
