Bravettes Win First Round of Post-Season Play
It was a great night for Montezuma softball. The Bravettes beat the Iowa Valley Tigers 16-6 in 5 innings. Even while missing some key players due to the junior high Washington, D.C. trip, the team made some big plays throughout the night. The missing players meant there would be some changes to the line up, shifting Carissa VanZee to pitcher and Maddy McKeag behind the plate as catcher.
Here are some highlights from the game. In the first inning, Chloe Latchum hit a nice double to the outfield to bring their lead to 4-1. Opposing fans were heated after the umpire called an out at home when VanZee tagged a player at home plate covering for McKeag. This brought on a warning to fans about language and behavior. By the top of the 3rd, the Bravettes were leading 10-2.
In-coming freshman, Kaprice Wearmouth had an exciting 4th inning when the Tigers had a hit that she snagged where she started a double play, tagging second and throwing to teammate Paige Robison at first. The next batter up for the Tigers hit a line drive to Wearmouth to catch the third out.
During the last inning, multiple players were walked as the opposing team’s pitcher was getting tired. The last play of the night: bases loaded, the pitch to senior, Olivia Moretz went right to her elbow sending her to first and walking in the last run. The umpire called it a game due to the ten-run rule. The Bravettes play at Sigourney on Wednesday evening at 7pm in the next round of regionals.
