Fall Sports Preview
New floor, new teams, new year. Montezuma High School on Thursday, August 15th brought the student athletes and their families together to introduce and kick off the sports season. It took place in the north gym to show off the new paint job of the basketball court. With a pep rally feel, it was easy to leave excited for what is to come from the Braves and Bravettes.
Speakers included athletic director, Tim Burgess, the athletic booster president, Buddy Boulton, and shooting sports coach/ after prom representative, Joel Kerchival. There was reflection on the past year of Montezuma athletics as well as looking forward to this year and upcoming fundraising.
Cheerleading started off the evening with a few cheers they have been working on. A big change for the squad is that they are now also performing stunts. Head cheer coach, Debbie Iverson only had positive words to say about her hard working group. You can find them cheering on the Braves football team this fall.
Next up was Kevin Gartman with this year’s cross country team. They have been logging lots of miles already in preparation for the first race. Though the boys side is a little smaller, they will be strong competitors this year. On the girls side, there will be a handful of talented freshman looking to continue to strengthen the Bravettes cross country program. High school cross country will have their first meet in Williamsburg at 4:30.
Coming off of a historic 2018 season, Bravettes volleyball girls are eager to show what they can do. They have spent the summer putting in the work in the weight room, team bonding, attending skills camps, and scrimmaging to fill the shoes of those who graduated. Head coach, Katie Dunlap, is looking forward to seeing more growth and was already proud of individuals who have put in the extra work and effort to help the team. They will be traveling a lot this season. You can watch the Bravettes next at Wilton for their scrimmage at 8am. Their first home game will be September 3rd at 5pm.
The Braves football team lined up with new head coach, Pat O’Brien. They have been working hard all summer in any weather. It is Montezuma’s second season playing 8-man football and the stadium is looking ready to see the Braves in action again. They start off the season away at Southeast Warren at 7. The first home football game will be on September 6th at 7.
Last, but not least, the Montezuma Dance Team were introduced and performed a routine that they have been working on this summer. Tryouts were held last spring and this team will be representing Montezuma at competitive dance competitions and also will perform at some home events. Be sure to keep an eye out for them as they continue with their new co-coaches, Vanessa Hilton and Macy Taylor.
Good luck to all Montezuma student athletes and coaches!
